Timeline: United States Presidents

1789

  • George Washington becomes the 1st president of the United States. He is the only nonpartisan president.

1897

  • John Adams becomes the 2nd president. He is the first president to live in the White House.

1801

  • Thomas Jefferson becomes the 3rd president.

1809

  • James Madison becomes the 4th president.

1817

  • James Monroe becomes the 5th president.

1825

  • John Quincy Adams becomes the 6th president. He and his father, John Adams, become the first father/son pair to both make it to the presidency.

1829

  • Andrew Jackson becomes the 7th president. He is the first president to ride on a train.

1837

  • Martin Van Buren becomes the 8th president.

1841

  • William Henry Harrison becomes the 9th president. At the time of his inauguration, he was the oldest person to assume the office of presidency (68 years old). He became ill, possibly due to bad weather at his inauguration, and died after only 32 days in office.
  • John Tyler becomes the 10th president.

1845

  • James K. Polk becomes the 11th president.

1849

  • Zachary Taylor becomes the 12th president; he dies during his second year in office.

1850

  • Millard Fillmore becomes the 13th president.

1853

  • Franklin Pierce becomes the 14th president.

1857

  • James Buchanan becomes the 15th president.
  • The South secedes from the Union.

1861

  • Abraham Lincoln becomes the 16th president.
