Jorge Ramos

"Honestly, I think getting myself to come back to school was the hardest. I spent about 4 years after high school working different jobs that would have not allowed me to grow as I have. I would have never thought that coming back to school at 24 would have been a good idea, but now I see that I would of missed out on so much."

Tutor Spotlight

Jorge Ramos tutored at the Centers for Learning Excellence in 2017.

Jorge Ramos grew up in Mercedes, Tx and attended Edcouch Elsa High School. He majored in Mathematics and received his Associate's Degree from STC. Eventually, he transferred career fields to focus on technology. He attained his Bachelor's of Applied Technology in Computer and Information Technology from UTRGV. What influenced you to go into the career field you chose?

I was very curious about how everything worked since I was a kid. A lot of my science projects in elementary school were just me taking apart a working thing and trying to make something else out of it. So, when I saw the opportunity to actually learn something in the same field, I took it.

When did you work at the CLE and how long did you work here?

I was a Math/Computer Programming/Networking tutor for about 3 years, I started working sometime in the fall of 2017.

What made you interested in applying to work at the CLE?

I felt that becoming a tutor in these subjects would help me develop my knowledge and sharpen my skills. I also wanted to be a resource for students who may have needed a study partner or someone to help solidify their knowledge.

Tell us a student success story that reaffirmed your love of tutoring. Did this impact your decision to pursue the career you did?

Over the period of time that I was a tutor, I was given multiple good news by students who had come in for a session or two. Hearing about their accomplishments was always a great thing, I think that is one of the reasons it was so nice working there.

What have you been doing since you left the CLE?

I started working as a Software Engineer for a company called Sandata Technologies. The company creates software for over 18 thousand health care providers in several states. I work in a department that creates software for agencies that provide assistance to individuals with intellectual disabilities.

How did working at the CLE prepare you for the career you have now?

I think it helped me in several ways. First, it helped me develop my social skills because I would interact with students daily and try to help them as best as I could. Second, I think it gave me a lot of practice in the field that I was looking to get into. Third, I think I developed the ability to ask a lot of questions, so now I’m not shy about asking when I don’t know something, and when working in a team of technical people that really helps.

Do you consider yourself to be successful? Why or why not?

This was my goal for 4 years and continues to be my goal. I think having gotten a job in this field was an accomplishment, however, I would not consider myself successful. Only because then that would mean that I’ve accomplished all I wanted and that I have not done.

What advice would you give new college students?

Stick with your plan, and reach out for help if needed. You will always have to do it when you find a job in the field you are looking to get into.

What was your favorite thing about working at the CLE?

The ability to help others get good at what you are good at.

What would you say was the biggest struggle to overcome in life thus far?

Honestly, I think getting myself to come back to school was the hardest. I spent about 4 years after high school working different jobs that would have not allowed me to grow as I have. I would have never thought that coming back to school at 24 would have been a good idea, but now I see that I would of missed out on so much.
