What influenced you to go into the career field you chose?
I was influenced by my experience working with students during college. Working at the CLE/in Higher Ed made me realized I wanted a career where I could support students academically and make a positive impact.
When did you work at the CLE and how long did you work here?
I started at the MVC CLE in 2019 and I worked there until 2024 (5 years).
What made you interested in applying to work at the CLE?
I used to tutor my classmates in high school, and a friend who worked at the CLE told me they were hiring. I wanted a part-time job while doing my undergrad, so I applied and got hired. Honestly, it ended up being the best job I could’ve asked for!
What have you been doing since you left the CLE?
Since I left the CLE, I have been working with the Dual Credit Programs. I assist high school students in applying and enrolling at STC so they can take dual credit classes. I also participate in recruitment efforts. Our program collaborates with 70 high schools and serves 13,000 students, making every day a rewarding and unique experience. I started as a dual credit student so it is definitely a full circle moment for me.
How did working at the CLE prepare you for the career you have now?
Working at the CLE helped me develop strong communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills. It also taught me how to support students from various backgrounds and learning styles, which directly prepared me for my current role.
What advice would you give to new college students?
Do not buy college textbooks at full price from the bookstores! (Learn from my mistakes lol.) Most of the time, they are not needed or required. If they are required, join Facebook groups from UTRGV/STC where people sell their books for much cheaper. There are also free PDFs that people share. The CLE also offers textbooks you can check out. Also, make friends! Going through college is much easier when you have a supportive group.
What was your favorite thing about working at the CLE?
My coworkers and supervisors! Our team dynamic was amazing, and everyone was so supportive and helpful. It was one of the greatest teams I have ever worked with, and I learned a lot from them.
What would you say was the biggest struggle to overcome in life thus far?
Believe it or not, graduating from college was one of my biggest struggles to overcome. I am a first-generation student, and due to personal circumstances, I had to drop out for a year. I faced a lot of obstacles during my undergrad, but with the support of my family and friends, I was able to go back to school and finish my bachelors with honors! I am deeply grateful that I made the decision to go back and finish my studies. It's a choice that transformed my life and reminded me that even when times are tough, ¡Sí se puede!
