GenAI Guide

Ethics and AI

When using AI...

  • Learn prompting strategies to develop effective prompts to get the best responses
  • Be aware that AI can be biased. It is only as good as the data it is based on and the algorithm behind the scenes. For an example of AI algorithm bias, see Joy Buolamwini, founder of Algorithmic Justice League; research assistant at MIT Media Lab, introduce and perform her spoken word piece “AI, Ain’t I a Woman?” | Vision & Justice || Radcliffe Institute
  • It is important to critically evaluate any GenAI output. AI tools can generate false sources or use out-of-date sources
  • Be aware that any sources the output provides should also be carefully evaluated
  • Use library databases instead of AI if you need reliable sources
  • Be transparent in your use of AI
  • Many writing style guides have guidance on how to cite GenAI content.
  • Keep transcripts of your prompts and the responses in case you are asked to produce them
  • Do not input any personal, confidential, proprietary or financial information into an AI tool
